Initial reaction to Michael Jackson's new single has been fairly positive, but no one is declaring the song a classic.
This Is It, which began streaming early Monday at michaeljackson.com, is the first new music by the pop icon to be released since his death June 25 at age 50.
It's the title track of an upcoming documentary that chronicles his last days of preparation for a series of London comeback concerts that were to have started in July. The film, which opens Oct. 28 for a two-week run, is accompanied by a double-disc album with original masters and alternate versions of Jackson's biggest hits.
The sunny, orchestra-backed single is punctuated by finger snaps and background vocals by his brothers. It will be heard in the movie's closing sequences. Those familiar with Jackson's music say the song probably was recorded during sessions for 1991's Dangerous album. The song is markedly similar to I Never Heard, a 1991 Safire song that Jackson co-wrote with Paul Anka.
"It's a safe, midtempo pop ballad that features what his fans love: his trademark breathy vocals and confident delivery," says AOL music editor Jessica Robertson. "I don't think it will set the world on fire, because it's missing what fans and critics love most about his songs, which is a strong and powerful groove to carry it."
"It's not bad," says Cori Murray, entertainment director at Essence magazine. "Folks who love him are going to love this. Sometimes with songs like this, you know why it was unreleased, but this sounds like something he could have put on an album."
In the Los Angeles Times' Pop & Hiss music blog, Todd Martens was more critical. He called the song "a trifle, and while it's one that certainly won't embarrass Jackson's legacy or break the hearts of fans eager to hear Jackson's voice again, it does bring the fallen pop icon a little back down to earth."
On the other hand, Dan Aquilante of the New York Post described it as "an optimistic, R&B ballad with an upbeat, percolating rhythm that has all the bombast and power of the New Jack Swing period of the early '90s." The style's founder, Teddy Riley, was a principal producer on Dangerous.
This Is It may not be representative of the dozens of unreleased Jackson songs in Sony's vaults, says Vibe.com editor in chief Jermaine Hall. In recent years, the singer had recorded with Akon, Ne-Yo and a variety of contemporary artists.
But the song will be a crowd-pleaser, no matter its vintage, Hall says. "Michael is so beloved by his fans that they are just waiting for anything that comes out from him — and they'll be happy with this record."
The single will return the focus to Jackson's music.
"This reminds you that he was a great artist and great songwriter," Murray says. "You'll want to see the last footage of him being that artist."
Anka gets credit on Jackson single

Anka said Jackson's estate moved quickly to give him credit, promising Anka 50% of the song's profits.
"They did the right thing," Anka said. "I don't think that anybody tried to do the wrong thing. It was an honest mistake."
The string-backed ballad was released on the singer's official website and sent to radio stations. It gives advance publicity to the documentary, culled from footage of Jackson rehearsing for the concerts that he never got a chance to do.
Representatives of Jackson's estate acknowledged Anka's work in a prepared statement. Until Anka stepped forward, the song's history was a mystery.
"The song was picked because the lyrics were appropriate because of the name Michael gave his tour," the statement said.
"We are thrilled to present this song in Michael's voice for the first time and that Michael's fans have responded in unprecedented numbers."
Singer Anka, 68, initially contemplated legal action after being informed by outlets such as the New York Times and TMZ of the similarities between This Is It and the Sa-Fire version. But later he said he was satisfied with how the situation was handled.

La Toya Jackson said her brother Michael looked "absolutely fabulous" when he was laid to rest last week.
In an interview on ABC television's 20/20 to be broadcast in the US tonight (early tomorrow UK time), she told Barbara Walters that the King of Pop was dressed in white pearl beads and a big gold belt, "like a belt that you win being a boxer.
"His hair was done beautifully, his makeup was done beautifully," she said.
A pair of sunglasses and a white glove were among the items placed in the coffin with him.
Michael Jackson's death on June 25 from a fatal combination of drugs has been labelled a homicide by the coroner's office.
Prosecutors are still investigating, and no charges have been filed. But La Toya Jackson said she blames her brother's death on "any and everybody" who gave him drugs.
"They're doctors!" she said. "This is going against their licence."
She called her brother "special," explaining that "he wasn't God, but he was certainly God-like. He was the closest thing to a god that I knew".
Contrary to earlier reports, Mary J. Blige will not take the stage at the highly anticipated tribute concert for Michael Jackson, which is planned to be held at Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna on date 26 later this month. Confirming the matter is the R 'n' B singer herself who told MTV News on Thursday, September 10, she won't be able to make it to the affair due to scheduling conflict as she will have to fulfill a contractual obligation in Milan on the same day.
"There's a lot going on at the time - I'm really, really sorry that I'm not gonna be able to be there," Blige said in a statement. " 'Cause why wouldn't I want to do a tribute to Michael Jackson?"
Notwithstanding her absence from the planned tribute, Blige has no hesitation to admit that she looks up to the late King of Pop and considers him as one of her inspirations to pursue a career in music industry. She also recalls the first time she watched his "Thriller" video. "When we didn't have anything and we were in our neighborhood, we were running home cutting school to watch the 'Thriller' video on MTV," she said. "He broke barriers that day and every day since then."
Shortly after Blige uttered her confirmation, Jermaine Jackson held a press conference, during when he insisted the songbird will be at Michael tribute concert. He said Blige will fly from a previously booked engagement in Milan to Vienna in time for her performance.
During the same press conference, Jermaine also claimed Chris Brown, who has denied his involvement in the tribute concert, will still appear at the event. He said only a judge's ruling could prevent Brown, who is on probation, from appearing
Jermaine Jackson's planned Vienna, Austria tribute to his late brother Michael is beginning to look like a case of wishful thinking - Mary J. Blige has turned the show down. Jackson announced Blige and Chris Brown would be among the headliners at a press conference on Tuesday (08Sep09), but both have since insisted they won't be part of the 26 September (09) concert at the Imperial Schonbrunn Palace.Brown's spokesperson has said, "Chris is not confirmed to perform or participate in any capacity for this show," and now Blige's people have followed suit - an aide insists the Family Affair singer will be in Italy and not in Austria on the day of the tribute.
Natalie Cole, Akon and Sister Sledge are also on the bill, according to Jermaine. Meanwhile, promoters are trying to play down reports that the King of Pop's brother is staging the Vienna show against his mother Katherine's wishes. Event organiser George Kindel says, "She will be there with Michael Jackson’s kids".

Janet is expected to open the show on September 13th at Radio City Music Hall. We're sure that it will set the tone for the whole show, which will undoubtedly eulogize Michael Jackson throughout.
Miss Jackson's performance is said to include 20 back-up dancers and sources have told TMZ that some of the rehearsals have lasted 15 hours in a single day!

أكدت أسرة مغني البوب الراحل مايكل جاكسون أن جثمانه سيدفن في اليوم الذي كان مفروضات ان يوافق الاحتفال بعيد ميلاده الحادي والخمسين في التاسع والعشرين من أغسطس/ آب الجاري.
وستقتصر مراسم الدفن على حضور الأقارب والأصدقاء وسيدفن جثمان جاكسون في جليندال في نطاق مجموعة مقابر خاصة.
وقال ناطق باسم أسرة جاكسون إن الأسرة تشعر بالامتنان لما قدمه محبو الفنان الراحل من مواساة لها.
وكان قد أقيم قداس على روح جاكسون في لوس أنجليس في الساعات التي سبقت الحفل الموسيقي المهدى إلى روحه في السابع من يوليو/ تموز.
وقد نقل النعش الذي يضم رفاته ووضع فوق خشبة المسرح حيث اقيم الحفل الموسيقي بينما ألقى أهله واصدقاؤه كلمات لتأبينه.
وقد أعلن المخرج السينمائي مايك لي عن اقامة حفل في حي بروكلين بنيويورك للاحتفاء بمسيرة مغني البوب الفنية طوال حياته.
وكان مايك لي قد عمل مع جاكسون في إخراج الفيديو الخاص بأغنية "إنهم لا يلقون بالا لنا"

وحول فكرة إصدار هذا الألبوم قال مصدر مقرب: "الفكرة جاءت من حفل تأبين مايكل الذي شاهده العالم كله، فلقد وجدنا ملايين من معجبيه يسألون ما إذا كان سيتم طرح ألبوم يضم أهم أغاني ملك البوب الراحل".
وتابع: "ولقد وجدناها فكرة رائعة، خاصة أن العديد من النجوم الكبار رحبوا بأن يشاركوا فيه، ليظهروا احترامهم وتقديرهم للأسطورة، وبالتأكيد سيحقق ألبوم أغاني مايكل هذا مبيعات مذهلة على مستوى العالم مع مجبيه، وأن يتم التبرع بعائد مبيعاته إلى الجميعات الخيرية التي كان مايكل يحب التعامل معها".
من ناحية أخرى، فلقد أشارت كاثرين جاكسون والدة مايكل في أول حوار إعلامي لها منذ وفاته في يونيو 2009 أنها مقتنعة أن وفاة ابنها لم تكن طبيعية، وأن التحقيق مازال جاريا بهذا الشأن.
جدير بالذكر أن أسطورة البوب رحل عن عالمنا 25 يونيو 2009 عن 50 عاما، بعد إصابته بأزمة قلبية حادة أودت بحياته، وذلك قبل بدئه لجولته الغنائية الأخيرة "ذاتس إت" That’s It التي كان مقررا لها 13 يوليو، وتشمل 50 حفلا في منطقة "أوه تو" بالعاصمة البريطانية لندن.
